The Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are feeling rather underwhelmed about life right now. Indeed, the Blues in our bar can’t believe links with Laurent Blanc and the fact the club have stopped work on building a new stadium has seriously dampened the mood here.
With that in mind, reports from the Mirror have only added to the aforementioned mood. According to them, the Stamford Bridge giants retain an interest in West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon this summer after the Baggies were relegated to the Championship.
Striking positions have been difficult to fill for the Blues of late, with last season’s big summer signing Alvaro Morata struggling to convince. Olivier Giroud was brought in over the course of the January window and, while the Frenchman certainly has his uses, isn’t exactly the kind of player you’d expect to lead Chelsea’s line.
Rondon is kind of similar in that respect. You can see why he’s so useful, but he’s certainly not a signing to get excited about, as the Blues in our bar are finding right now.
Chelsea surely can’t sign Rondon. The former Zenit man would have to operate in the same kind of role as Giroud as a back-up and, more than anything, the Blues need a marquee marksman this summer. Though money might be tighter this year than usual, it’d send the completely wrong message to fans.
