It’s been a season to forget for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, who have been ferociously vocal in their damming of some of their beloved club’s multitude of flops this term. One name that has invoked the ire of the Blues faithful as they shout over the jukebox is Branislav Ivanovic – whose had a pretty awful season by his standards.
Imagine their delight then at reports emanating out of Italy, in Corriere dello Sport, that the 32-year old is a target for Serie A giants Roma.
Despite signing a new one-year contract extension only recently, the stand in Blues skipper reportedly has a host of admires in the Italian capital as they bid to find a player who can be used either in central defence or at full-back.
The stoic Serb has been a Stamford stalwart for seven seasons, though their nightmare defence of the Premier League title this term has lifted some of the air of invincibility he earned due to his largely excellent exploits since joining from Lokomotiv Moscow way back in 2008.
It is claimed that the clubs met on Friday to discuss a potential deal, while it is understood the defender would be tempted by the notion of plying his trade in Italy as he enters the autumn of his career.
Though a new deal was recently penned, Serie A clubs have previous in moving for players who have done so before – with Juventus nabbing Patrice Evra from Manchester United back in 2014 not long after he extended his deal at Old Trafford.
Major changes are expected at Stamford Bridge over the course of the summer as Antonio Conte prepares to arrive in West London as their new manager on a three-year deal.
Chelsea fans – would you be upset to see Ivanovic depart West London after so long? Has this season ruined his reputation?
