Chelsea are closer to handing Willian a new two-year contract, according to the Daily Mail.
Would you like Willian to leave Chelsea?
Despite the move from the west London side, Barcelona are looking for to snap up the player when he contract ends next summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The move would continue a change of stance from the Blues on handing longer than one-year contract extensions for players over 30 (via The Guardian).
An increase in trust from manager Frank Lampard has certainly paid dividends for the Blues. The former Derby County manager revealed that he is relying on the attacker ahead of the rest of the season.
He said: “But everyone sees how much I’m relying on him, and picking him and in what he is producing, I love him at this football club. So there’s my answer.” (Source: The Mirror)
Willian has proved useful with his contribution in the last few league games, scoring and assisting five of the club’s last 15 goals in the top-flight (via Transfermarkt).
However, it is his experience which really has shone for the Stamford Bridge giants this year. In the game against Crystal Palace, Chelsea’s proved unable to breakdown the Eagles, however, a smart flick from Willian set up Tammy Abraham for the opening goal to ease fears over dropped points.
With a raft of young players making their way into the first team, Willian proves the most experienced man in attack. The Brazil international has made 209 appearances in the English top-flight, as opposed to just 45 for Abraham, 12 for Mason Mount and just nine for Christian Pulisic.
Stripping the side of it’s only experienced attacker would be a horrible move from the club and could leave with poorer attacking performances like the one against the Eagles.
Handing Willian a new contract proves to be the best option for the club, especially with inflated fees in the transfer market making a replacement far more expensive to buy.
