Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter has agreed a new contract with the club before heading out to Birmingham City on loan for the upcoming season.
The Blues announced on their official website that the England U-21 international had committed his future with the club until 2022 following an impressive spell out on loan at Vitesse last season as Frank Lampard continues to tie down promising players at Chelsea for the future.
Clarke-Salter joined the list of Chelsea players to enjoy success at Vitesse after joining the Eredivisie club for the year last season, where the England U-21 captain made 37 appearances in all competitions and racked up over 2,900 minutes of first-team football (per Transfermarkt).
Statistically, the youngster impressed for the Dutch side. Looking at Vitesse’s defensive stats from WhoScored for the season, Clarke-Salter registered the most clearances per 90 out of anyone in the squad with 5.5, as well as winning the most offsides with 0.8 per game.
The 21-year-old also showed an innate ability to win the ball back without drawing too many fouls, making just 0.5 fouls on average last season, the lowest out of any centre-back in the team.
With the likes of Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz the clear first-team centre-backs for Chelsea heading into the new season based on their number of appearances last season (per Transfermarkt), Clarke-Salter’s opportunities would be few and far between.
Fellow teammate Fikayo Tomori thrived at Derby County last season, winning the Rams’ Player of the Season award (per the Derby Telegraph), and although it is too early to call whether or not Clarke-Salter will have a similar impact at Birmingham, the success of previous Chelsea loanees in the Championship are an encouraging sign for the centre-back.
Chelsea fans, will Clarke-Salter be a success at Birmingham next season? Let us know!
