Chelsea are considering a late move for their ex-player and Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake.
According to The Telegraph (via Daily Star), the west London club have a £40m buy-back option following the 24-year-old’s sale back in 2017 and could look to invoke it. And all things considered, it could end up being a good move.
Chelsea have struggled defensively this season and Ake could be the man to help them out in that area. Indeed, having conceded 32 goals in the Premier League, more than the likes of Manchester United and Crystal Palace, work can certainly be done there.
Bournemouth have hardly been great themselves, conceding 37. However, it would be fair to argue that Ake has done himself some justice. He is only being dribbled past 0.2 times per game, an average that would be the lowest in Chelsea’s squad when it comes to defenders (via WhoScored).
The Netherlands international also has a better pass success rate (88.9%) than all of Chelsea’s centre-backs bar Andreas Christensen (90.9%), suggesting that he would have no problems with coming in and playing out from the back.
This looks like a no-brainer, especially when you consider the fact that Ake is also capable of playing at left-back. That has proven to be a problem position for Lampard this season, with the Englishman failing to settle on one name. So far, Cesar Azpilicueta, Emerson and Marcos Alonso have all played there.
So as well as centre-back, perhaps Ake could also be a solution for Lampard there. Bearing all of that in mind, for £40m, why not?
