We all expected new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to have a considerable impact on the Premier League landscape upon his return to England and as usual he hasn’t let us down.
Since his appointment was confirmed early last week there has been a whole host of rumours in the Football Transfer Tavern linking top players with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Today it is the turn of The Telegraph who suggest that Mourinho wants a reunion with Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso at Chelsea.
The 31-year-old Spanish international, who enjoyed such success during his previous spell in England where he helped Liverpool to their fifth Champions League title, only has one year left on his contract at the Bernabeu and that could see him leaving for Chelsea this summer.
Mourinho is seeking to overhaul the squad he has inherited at Stamford Bridge and has noticed a weakness in central midfield where he believes Alonso could help to rectify the situation.
The Telegraph also reports that Chelsea are to step up their chase for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani after they saw an initial offer rejected by the Italians yesterday’s while Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay is thought to be another transfer target.
