Chelsea: Club linked with move for OGC Nice full-back Youcef Atal - Chelsea

Chelsea have been linked with a move for OGC Nice fullback Youcef Atal, according to 90min.

The publication are claiming that the full-back has caught the interest of the Blues among many other European clubs including, Paris Saint Germain, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

Atal recently did an interview with Canal+, in which he revealed that he is aware of the interest in him and believes he can play for a big club.

A move for the player may not come until next summer, however, with the west London side still awaiting a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport about overturning their two-window transfer ban (via The Guardian).

Chelsea’s squad certainly is one that needs rebuilding, and with Cesar Azpilicueta currently sitting at 30-years-old, bringing in a more youthful defender is a must.

However, Atal’s ability to play down the entire right side also makes him a danger to ageing winger Willian, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The Algerian international has featured at right-wing in six and right-back in one of the 11 games he’s played in all competitions this season. This comes despite him having played at right-back for the majority of the last campaign.

For a natural right-back, it really is stunning to see that the 23-year-old averages more dribbles and is fouled more per game in Ligue 1 than Willian is in the Premier League (via WhoScored).

And in terms of defending, the Algerian averages more interceptions per game than Azpilicueta, showing his strength in being able to read the game.

To find a player who is comfortable going forward and sitting back in defence can be labelled as quite rare.

“It is very difficult to find top-class full-backs because we demand so much from them,” Damien Comolli was quoted as saying by The Telegraph back in 2017, and it looks like Atal has the versatility to make it at the top.

And at such a young age, he may prove to be an astute signing for the Stamford Bridge giants as they look to rebuild their squad to challenge for the title.
