The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are extremely disappointed after missing out on Champions League qualification which compiled more misery onto their really poor title defence.
Chelsea’s campaign started badly and ended in similar fashion after being embarrassed by Newcastle 3-0 on the last day. The summer could arguably be their most important in years and with rivals constantly improving, our punters are demanding that the Blues go all guns blazing for Antoine Griezmann, who is valued at a hefty £90 million by Transfer Markt.
Alvaro Morata promised a great deal but in reality didn’t deliver enough for Chelsea to trust him again as their number one forward next season, prompting the need for a world-class player such as Griezmann.
The Frenchman has continued his fine form for Atletico Madrid this season, scoring 29 goals as well as providing 15 assists for team-mates. As evidenced by his goalscoring record, he is prolific in front of goal, but his qualities extend far beyond that. Possessing brilliant pace and technique, he’s a real handful for opposition defenders to handle, and that is what the Blues have lacked this season. They simply haven’t been threatening enough, and the prospect of Griezmann linking up with Willian and Eden Hazard would be frightening.
Whether Chelsea still have the drive and willingness to target the best players is in doubt right now as their transfer activity in the last 12 months suggests that the Blues are favouring the cheaper options these days. However, owner Roman Abramovich is still blessed with huge amounts of money and what better way to silence the doubters than to bring in one of the best forwards in world football right now?
At 27-years-old, could Griezmann endure the peak of his career in the Premier League if Chelsea push hard enough?
