Don Hutchison joined BBC’s Football Daily podcast and discussed Chelsea’s victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup but also emphasised what should still be the priority for the Blues.
Beating Liverpool and advancing into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup was definitely a huge thing for Frank Lampard and his troops. Of course, just beating the Reds is an accomplishment on its own but this one was even sweeter since it meant elimination for their rivals.
But even with that being said, Hutchison still believes Chelsea should be entirely focused on finishing in the top four of the Premier League table so that they can secure Champions League football for the upcoming season.
Here’s what he said for BBC’s Football Daily podcast (4/3/2020): “But the most important thing for Chelsea and Frank Lampard is securing the top four or a Champions League spot. That’s going to be key.”
Of course, going as far as possible in the FA Cup and even potentially winning it will definitely be on Lampard’s mind right now, especially following the elimination of such a big rival for the crown.
But Hutchison seems to believe that that shouldn’t really distract Chelsea from a much bigger task ahead of them and that’s securing a spot in the Champions League.
Currently, the Blues are sitting in fourth but Manchester United and Wolves are just three points behind them and the race is bound to be tight until the very end.
