Clearly, many revelations were made when Chelsea topped off an uneasy season with UEFA Europa League glory last week.
Eden Hazard opened up on his future and pretty much confirmed his departure for Real Madrid and the rumours linking Maurizio Sarri with a move to Juventus seemingly went into overdrive, though we’re not going to talk about those two.
Instead, we’re going to talk about the misuse of a sometimes forgotten Chelsea star. Indeed, a certain Emerson Palmeri.
The 24-year-old only made 10 Premier League appearances last season though proved to be almost a mainstay in the Europa League team. It’s in Europe where he’s displayed his brilliance with some solid performances, which included him not only being a clever attacking option but also much more stable defensively than Marcos Alonso.
Not that it was a difficult, mind.
Frankly, the Spaniard was barely missed in Baku, where Emerson ran the show through the left. The Brazilian-born Italian international’s surging runs forward complimented Eden Hazard, allowing him to cut inside and cause nightmares for Arsenal. Granted, the Belgian’s excellence helped there but its a promising sign for the future with Chrisitan Pulisic raring to go.
Topping off the finale with a clever assist for the opening goal, Emerson proved he’s the real full-back Chelsea need.
Unlike Alonso, he doesn’t make crucial mistakes which undermine the complete unit. Granted, Emerson does get beaten for space and lunges into challenges too soon occasionally, but the more he plays, the more he improves with his defensive contribution.
The Blues need to build as their transfer ban looms large over Stamford Bridge and trusting the former Roma ace seems a good way to start.
Going forward, he’s a much better crosser than Alonso and his creative edge adds the unpredictable factor through the left-flank. Emerson might not be the most experienced, but his quality is required to revitalize Chelsea’s static backline next season.
