Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been wondering if they’re hallucinating this morning, following some shock reports from the continent.
German outlet Bild state the Blues have earmarked former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel as the ideal candidate to replace Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge if the Blues’ struggles continue over the course of the coming months.
Chelsea have endured a difficult summer, which orientates around losing key personnel and lacking squad depth in key-areas, which has led Conte to be frustrated by his side’s lack of activity in the market; despite signing Willy Caballero, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata.
Conte is desperate to add further faces to his side before the transfer window shuts next week but the surprise defeat to Burnley on the Premier League’s opening weekend has raised concerns regarding the defending champions, although they did bounce-back to beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.
Whether Tuchel would steady the ship remains to be seen though, especially as he doesn’t have the winning experience that Chelsea usually look for in their bosses, but this could potentially be seen as a good thing as the Blues have endured a wealth of managerial issues over the years.
Thomas Tuchel may well be a good appointment for Chelsea but it’s difficult to argue that he would be superior to Antonio Conte, so the Blues would be better off listening to their manager’s demands rather than seeking to replace the Italian boss.
Chelsea should have learned their lessons from previous transfer window mistakes and ignoring Conte’s pleas for further signings could lead to a wealth of problems as the season progresses, particularly when the Blues are left battling on numerous fronts.
