Many Chelsea fans have been replying to a tweet shared by the Blues’ official Twitter account focusing on Olivier Giroud scoring for France, by calling on Frank Lampard to play the disgruntled striker more often.
Should Giroud leave Chelsea?
Giroud has featured for just 191 minutes across all competitions since Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge to replace Maurizio Sarri in the summer, with the Blues icon only calling on the Frenchman to start twice (TransferMarkt).
The ex-Arsenal forward has not played in the Premier League since matchday three, either, and has been omitted from Lampard’s matchday squad for the last three top-flight fixtures, as well as the Blues’ Carabao Cup win over Grimsby Town.
He is yet to publically complain about his lack of minutes in West London, but told Le Pelerin while with the France squad that he does not accept the situation he currently has to deal with.
“Accept it? No, I do not accept it,” the disgruntled striker said. “You do not have to be fatalistic in certain situations. I have always been respectful and humble.
“Even if I do not agree with the coach, I do not criticise him. But in myself, I cannot accept it because I know what I’m worth on a pitch. Last year, when I felt that I deserved to play, I asked the coach for explanations.”
Giroud’s lack of domestic action has not hindered his involvement with the France Euro 2020 qualifying squad, as they look to challenge Turkey for the top spot in Group H, with Didier Deschamps turning to the 33-year-old in each tie of the tournament thus far.
Deschamps’ trust was repaid on Friday night, too, when Giroud stepped up to score from the spot in the 66th minute, with what proved to be the winning goal against Iceland to remain level on points with Turkey ahead of their showdown on Monday.
A number of those fans have voiced their hope in Lampard recalling the striker after Chelsea shared a tweet focusing on Giroud’s efforts for Les Bleus.
