Chelsea failed to get back to winning ways against Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but there were some positives, and one of them was another strong performance by 19-year-old Reece James. He played the full 90 in what was his fourth appearance and second start in the competition this season.
WhoScored rated him 7.48/10 for his showing and Sky Sports went one better, giving him an 8/10, the joint-highest rating on the night alongside Mateo Kovacic. They described him as Chelsea’s “best attacking outlet”, pointing to his “dangerous” crosses and noting Valencia’s best opportunities came down the other flank. He’s made just one start and four substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season, but maybe Wednesday’s game will change that.
After the match, the Englishman posted a photo on Twitter of him running with the ball with the caption: “Tough game against Valencia this evening, We keep fighting. Thanks for the support”. Fans were quick to reply and praise the youngster on just how well he performed in such a high-level game.
