Chelsea fans on Twitter U-turned to call for Kovacic signing last night

If you’re going to be average for a whole season and turn up for one game, at least Mateo Kovacic picked the right game to show up for. The Croatian has been a solid 6/10 for the entire campaign but last night he finally stepped up and shone, with a quality display helping the Blues run the midfield, leading to calls for him to be signed permanently.

Chelsea fans will be waking up with sore heads today after what would have been an incredible night of celebration. The Blues’ win saw them become Europa League champions for the second time after their 2013 success in UEFA’s second-string competition, and what a way to bow out it was for Eden Hazard. It would also have been a suitable exit for Kovacic, but it seems the Stamford Bridge faithful are calling for more of the World Cup finalist.

There’s a strong argument that says that Ruben Loftus-Cheek would have been the man to start in Kovacic’s place had he not ruptured his achilles in a pathetic scheduled friendly against New England Revolution away in America. In the end, despite the woes of having no Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic starred, but if that performance sees the Croatian become a permanent addition to the Blues then it may not all be a good thing that he starred last night.

The Blues would love to see Kovacic signed up this summer after yesterday but should give that move some thought before diving into it.
