It was the Hammers’ first victory at Stamford Bridge in 17 years, with Frank Lampard’s former club coming back to haunt the Blues manager.
Despite the disappointing result, one of Lampard’s young proteges was commended for his performance at Stamford Bridge in the defeat to their London rivals.
Teenage right back Reece James delivered no fewer than nine crosses on just his second Premier League start of the season, the joint-most of anyone in the game, while he found a team-mate with 62 of his 69 passes for an accuracy rate of 89.9%. [via WhoScored]
Despite only one of his crosses finding a team-mate, Oliver Harbord of Football London believed that to be the fault of Chelsea’s strikers, writing: “Some of his crosses in the first half were exceptional, but Chelsea’s strikers weren’t able to get on the end of them.”
He also described James as “the best Chelsea outfield player on the pitch for the 90 minutes” and these Blues fans on Twitter commended the 19-year-old on his performance in the defeat:
Reece James can be a joy to watch. Kid’s gonna go far

Reece James is needed. His crosses need to be attacked. Chelsea has to find a new Drogba. #CFC

Such a frustrating game to watch, no end product whatsoever. Reece James was our best player by far, everyone else fairly average. #CFC

Only positive from the game. Reece James, so strong and composed.
