At this stage in the campaign, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard’s faith in youth has paid its dividends. Sitting in the top four and having beaten rivals Tottenham and Arsenal in their own backyards this season, life does look good for those in SW6 right now.
Under the restrictions of a transfer ban, the Blues legend was forced to unleash the talent emerging from their heralded academy in just his second season as a full-time manager. Obviously, the likes of Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all impressed, but Tammy Abraham has certainly been the main man amongst them.
Abraham, 22, has scored 15 goals and registered five assists in his 29 appearances this season. Wearing the number nine shirt at Stamford Bridge, Abraham has kept the likes of Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi out of contention and made himself one of the first names on the team sheet. Even looking deeper into the numbers, the former Aston Villa loanee averages the most shots per game (3.1, via WhoScored) and wins the second-highest number of aerial duels (3.5), proving his worth all over the park.
His incredible form has led to an England call-up from Gareth Southgate, scoring his first goal in the 7-0 win over Montenegro. With Harry Kane out injured ahead of the European Championship, Chelsea fans were quick to laud Abraham as England’s leading marksman.
Here’s how some of them reacted to a club Twitter post:
