Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has made his feelings known when it comes to selecting summer signing, Christian Pulisic.
The USA international has thus far failed to make an impact on proceedings at Stamford Bridge, despite costing the Blues over £50m in the summer.
However, his manager Frank Lampard has insisted that the transfer fee alone isn’t enough to justify him selecting the young winger.
“I spoke to Christian two days before the Grimsby game and was very clear about the standards. And we have to give him the fact he has moved country, leagues and is as young as all the young players we are talking about,” Lampard said, in quotes taken from the Mirror.
“He has just turned 21. So if anyone is getting too excited about this, they should calm down, frankly, because he has already started five games for us.”
Lampard also touched on the fact he has a wealth of top-quality players to select from in his Chelsea squad and made reference to the fact that it is impossible for him select them all in his first XI.
The likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have flourished under Lampard this season, while Pulisic has had to sit back and be patient despite making the five starts Lampard alluded to. The fact is, the American hasn’t exactly set the world alight following his arrival with attackers such as Callum Hudson-Odoi (who has only recently returned), Pedro, Mason Mount and Ross Barkley have all made more key passes a game than the former Borussia Dortmund ace according to WhoScored.
Independent journalist Miguel Delaney even claimed one Premier League boss told him the player was like a ‘bottle of pop’ in that he wasn’t too convinced, so the jury is seemingly out as it stands.
Still, patience should be the key for Pulisic here, although it’s easy to see why he might be getting a bit frustrated given how often he played in Dortmund, where he made 127 appearances.
However, Chelsea do have good attacking players when looking at the stats above, and Lampard does have a point when he says about Pulisic being only 21 and settling into a new country.
