There are absolutely no excuses Gonzalo Higuain can give anymore.
The famed Argentine had his one chance to redeem his failures by helping Chelsea’s top-four bid with a special performance at Anfield, but he ended up being woeful once again.
Granted that Higuain didn’t start the game, which is fair considering his poor form, he came on just before the hour mark with his side under pressure. Rather than making an impact as a super-sub, he ended up frustrating the fans even more. Higuain’s poor touches, inability to attempt shots on goal and predictable movement all played into Liverpool’s hands.
He really is looking a shadow of his former self. Indeed, the man – somehow still rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt – who thrilled Napoli fans under Maurizio Sarri really is no more.
Virgil Van Dijk seemed almost a relieved man having to defend against him as compared to the tricky Eden Hazard beforehand. The former Real Madrid star was bullied into oblivion, while his work on the ball was lacklustre as usual.
Frankly, there is absolutely no reason Maurizio Sarri should trust upon him to lead his line anymore.
Three goals from ten appearances aren’t something expected from a presumed elite level striker. Higuain isn’t even the best striker at Chelsea currently. Oliver Giroud is miles ahead, looking more hungry and clinical upfront. Yes, the Frenchman looks more clinical than someone else, isn’t that mad?
If he loses Giroud in the summer for ignoring him to prefer Higuain, the fault is all on Maurizio Sarri.
However, there is still time to make things right. With Europa League campaign and top-four race still going on, Chelsea needs to trust on Giroud to provide the goods and keep away Higuain as far as possible before shipping him off after May.
