Was signing Gonzalo Higuain even the correct decision?
Many Chelsea fans must be wondering this after watching their marquee January signing have another disappointing shift in their draw against Wolves. Brought on to add goals to Chelsea’s game, he’s been unable to retain his reputation of a top goal-scorer in England.
The Argentine had another frustrating night in front of goal against a sturdy Wolves side, who marked him out the game. While the Argentine did get into promising positions at certain periods, he lacked the killing blow that made him so feared in other parts of the continent.
Indeed, most of his weak shots were saved by Rui Patricio, and he shockingly scuffed the one big chance he got inches away from goal.
He’s now only scored three goals from six appearances, with his strikes coming against relegation contenders Huddersfield Town and Fulham. Whenever pressed by a compact defensive unit, he’s struggled to break through and is beginning to look his age, even under Maurizio Sarri, who coached him to his best ever goals tally while together at Napoli.
Higuain’s just not agile enough to get behind his defenders, nor can he latch onto crosses before them. While Eden Hazard saved the Blues from doom yet again with his 13th of the season, Higuain’s blushes couldn’t be saved.
If Chelsea are to mount a top-four challenge and win the Europa League, they need more clinical players in their final third.
If not the physical Olivier Giroud, then playing Hazard as a false number 9 feels a better option for Maurizio Sarri right now.
Gonzalo Higuain is actually holding their attack back and needs to work much harder to shine through in London.
