Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have debated for a long time about who the ideal replacement for John Terry is but it seems their side have come to a decision.
The Daily Mirror states Chelsea have identified Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson as the successor to long-serving captain John Terry, who they predict will become the latest name to move to China at the end of the season.
Terry has been a part of Chelsea’s first-team since before the millennium but has struggled for opportunities in Antonio Conte’s side this season, and was sent off in last weekend’s FA Cup victory over Peterborough United.
With Terry having turned 36 last month, it seems increasingly likely that this will be the former England captain’s last year at Stamford Bridge and the Blues have selected Boro ace Gibson as the ideal replacement.
23-year-old Gibson has established himself as one of the most sought-after young defenders in English football and a transfer to Chelsea would prove to be costly, with The Mirror indicating a fee could be around the £30m mark.
Our landlord isn’t convinced that Gibson is worth that much but accepts that clubs have to pay a premium these days for English talent.
