Chelsea have made a loan bid for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, that is according to The Times.
And with how things are currently going for the Blues, you would have to say Frank Lampard has had no choice but to ask his superiors to deliver him the Uruguay international.
Atletico Madrid are also desperate for his signature, but Lampard surely needs him more than Diego Simeone following Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal. 1-0 up and playing against 10 men, Chelsea failed to put their London rivals to the sword and were forced to settle for a point.
“You have to have a killer instinct,” Lampard was quoted as saying after the game as his side dropped more points following the recent defeat to Newcastle United. So is Cavani the man to give Chelsea just that?
Amassing over 300 club goals in his career, the answer is surely yes. Tammy Abraham has done a brilliant job this season, netting 15 times in all competitions for the Blues. But the need for an alternative is becoming increasingly pressing, especially after his injury from the Arsenal outing.
Playing just 140 minutes of Premier League football this season, Michy Batshuayi is clearly not that in Lampard’s mind (via WhoScored).
No, instead, it is Cavani who looks the much more appropriate option, scoring 18 goals in 20 Ligue 1 starts last term. He averaged 2.5 shots per game that campaign, which is lower than Tammy Abraham’s current average of 3.1 but more than everyone else’s in Chelsea’s squad bar Christian Pulisic (also 2.5).
At 32 years of age, the PSG man would only provide a short-term fix. But some sort of fix is better than no fix for a Chelsea side plummeting back down towards the Europa League.
