The topsy-turvy ride under Maurizio Sarri is threatening to destroy Chelsea’s season.

They fell to another defeat, this time at Goodison Park when a resurgent Everton side gave them the Blues. On a day when their attack was ineffective, their defence also failed to hold their end of the bargain.

While many flaws can be pointed out in Sarri’s system, when players continuously make errors, one individual can’t really help improve anything. Such a player is the ridiculously error-prone Marcos Alonso.

Indeed, the Spaniard’s complete regression under the Italian’s been stark, with some fans quite understandably calling for his head.

Alonso, a left-back who acts like a left-winger, has forgotten his roots. He’s seemingly more interested in roaming forward, flinging crosses or getting into goal-scoring positions rather than neutralizing his opposition’s attacking threat. In fact, the Spanish international ends up making more mistakes than he attacks at the moment, with his latest dooming Chelsea’s chance to gain ground on the top four race.

The left-back might’ve been impressive going forward, but looked uneasy throughout against Richarlison. The Brazilian outwitted him multiple times, eventually goading him into fouling him inside the box to earn the winning penalty. In that instance, Alonso should’ve easily cleared the ball instead of fouling him, yet his lack of concentration in pressure situations haunted him again.

The Everton despair adds to a list of poor showings from the Spaniard under Sarri. Alonso’s quickly becoming Chelsea’s weak-link in defence and a figure targeted by other teams, with his latest disaster proving why he should be replaced imminently.
