By no means was Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Valencia in the Champions League last night a terrible result.
However, considering a win would have sent Frank Lampard’s side into the next round, you cannot blame some for feeling a little disappointed.
One man, though, who would have been buzzing after the game is Mateo Kovacic. The 25-year-old scored his first goal for Chelsea — in exquisite style one might add — and his first since 2017.
Indeed, he looked delighted after finding Jasper Cillessen’s bottom corner, running towards the camera in celebration.
He laughed, Lampard laughed, it was great to see given the Croatia international’s struggles in front of goal.
Still, even without the goal, it was a great performance by Kovacic — a recurring theme this season.
A press-resistant midfielder, the way he collected the ball and drove through the middle was exquisite.
Freed from the shackles of Maurizio Sarri’s “Sarri-ball”, Mateo Kovacic looks a transformed midfielder under Lampard. If the former Real Madrid man wants to continue scoring goals from midfield, then there is no better ex-pro to learn from.
