Maurizio Sarri surely wants to sign a new striker this summer.
The former Napoli boss was finally announced as Antonio Conte’s successor following months of speculation. After guiding the Italian side to two-second place finishes in three years, he is tasked with putting Chelsea back into the hunt for the title. There is plenty of work to be done if the Blues are to catch Manchester City.
Sarri dealt a massive blow to Pep Guardiola earlier this month by signing Jorginho from his former employers despite the Italian being continually linked with a move to the Etihad. Reports suggest the 59-year-old wants to bring Juventus forward, Gonzalo Higuaín, to Stamford Bridge. His arrival could see Olivier Giroud leave the club amidst links to Atletico Madrid.
Instead of signing Higuaín, Chelsea should once again attempt to sign Roma hitman – Edin Dzeko. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Bosnian international enjoyed another stellar season in Italy, netting 17 goals in all competitions. The Blues targeted the 32-year-old in January but instead signed Giroud from Arsenal.
Dzeko is a world-class finisher and is no stranger to life in England. He spent four years in the Premier League with Manchester City after leaving Wolfsburg, scoring 50 goals in 130 appearances for the Citizens. His experience on English shores makes him better suited for life in the Premier League than Higuaín.
Chelsea can’t afford to take a risk on the Argentina international in a crucial transitional period – moving for Dzeko makes much more sense.
