Maurizio Sarri clearly has some big decisions to make in the summer.
With a FIFA transfer ban looming on Chelsea, he can’t even splash out on players. Surely, the Blues’ defence is something he’d like to improve upon soon and the biggest priority must be looking towards the frail full-back scenario.
Davide Zappacosta’s turned out an absolute dud signing, while Emerson and Marcos Alonso aren’t really the most complete of full-backs either. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta might be defensively strong, but is extremely lacklustre going forward, starting to look his age. In a system which relies upon the attacking solidity of full-backs, the Spaniard has failed miserably towards creating chances.
Their right-back (valued at £7.65m by Transfermarkt) issue is growing into a bigger problem with each passing day. However, there are options to turn to. Among their uncountable number of loanees, Ola Aina’s particularly impressed with his tenure in Serie A. In fact, he’s been in excellent form for Torino, helping them keep 11 clean-sheets in 27 appearances so far.
Moreover, he’s also been an impressive figure going forward. The inquisitive full-back loves to burst forward, while his inviting crosses can be a menacing thing for the opposition. Indeed, he offers much more going forward than the fairly toothless Azplicueta, while his relentless defensive approach helps frustrate wingers and win back possession.
In short, he’s perfect for Sarri-ball. Whatever that is.
It’s no surprise Chelsea are reportedly unwilling to let go of this special young talent. The 22-year-old has a bright future ahead and possesses all the traits to be a complete full-back. It’s time for Sarri to finally trust the youth system and experiment with making the exciting Aina a pivotal part of his team next season.
