Chelsea reportedly in agreement with star player over contract talks

Chelsea fans here in the Tavern are worried about losing one of their biggest stars in the summer, after seeing him produce another impressive season at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, Antonio Conte’s future in the English capital looks less than certain, as replacements are seemingly being eyed up by the defending Premier League champions. However, the future of ‘keeper Thibaut Courtois is something that the club won’t want to waste time in securing, but it now seems as if they’ll have to wait, as according to reports in the Daily Mail, Chelsea and Thibaut Courtois have put contract talks on hold as Real Madrid eye bid.

The Blues will delay their contract talks with the Belgian until after their games against Barcelona and Leicester. Indeed, the 25-year-old was expected to hold talks with the London club during February amid interest from Real Madrid, but no discussions have taken place.

Subsequently, the goalkeeper’s contract runs out in the summer of 2019, with Chelsea willing to pay him more than £200,000-a-week to keep him at Stamford Bridge. Although, if the Pensioners fail to renew Courtois’ contract then they risk losing him to Real Madrid in the summer, as the Spanish giants are keen to table a bid for the shot-stopper.

And, our local residents are beginning to get very concerned over the delay in contract talks, after both the club and player agreed that negotiations should not take place with key domestic and European games ahead.

Landlord’s Verdict:

The stall in talks between the goalkeeper and the London club is a worrying sign for many, as Real Madrid look to be getting closer towards securing their man. And, with the Spanish outfit also keen on tabling a bid for the Belgian, it may not be long until the shot-stopper makes a final decision on his future. Although, asking to delay the talks at a crucial point in the Blues’ season could benefit the club, as it gives them the opportunity to focus on the challenges ahead, while allowing for Courtois to have some extra thinking space.
