One mission might’ve been achieved by Chelsea, but there are several more to accomplish to regain their place at English football’s pinnacle.
Indeed, they might’ve guaranteed a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, yet now have some internal matters to look into.
Not only does the Eden Hazard situation demand proper attention, but even David Luiz is on the outgoing list. The Brazilian’s contract is up after the season and Chelsea are in danger of losing the Brazilian for free next season. Amidst all their problems with the FIFA transfer ban, the Blues have forgotten to give attention to those who deserve it.
Granted, the Brazilian isn’t the most stable of defenders, yet he’s the most experienced campaigner now that Gary Cahill is to leave Stamford Bridge. Maurizio Sarri confirmed the club are holding talks with Luiz (quotes sourced by the Sun) over a new contract, but a definite decision is yet to come to fruition.
Luiz has been a key cog for Sarri in the Blues’ defensive line, with his impeccable distribution and dominant nature being vital to the Italian’s success. He’s helped his side keep 14 clean-sheets this season while maintaining a 75% tackling success, 138 clearances and 158 duels won (stats via Premier League).
Yes, he’s not perfect, but the South American has won it all in West London and remains a solid enough defender at the highest level. Why let him leave again? It’d be stupid.
Act quick, Mr Roman Abramovich.
Despite the odd mistake, his experience is invaluable to Sarri. With the possibility of signing a replacement bleak with the transfer ban, they need to keep hold of Luiz for longer. Antonio Rudiger will crumble without a senior figure beside him and the afro-haired Brazilian’s departure can cause a complete malfunction in Chelsea’s defence next season.
