Chelsea set to challenge Man United for excellent defender

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have clashed with their Manchester United counterparts once again, after the Blues were linked with another of Jose Mourinho’s transfer targets.

The Daily Mirror states Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Inter Milan in the chase for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, who has been a target of Mourinho’s since last summer.

22-year-old Lindelof, and a host of Benfica’s other top-talents, are expected to move away from the club in the coming months as the Portuguese side battle with vast debt problems, which they’ll aim to overturn by the sale of their best players.

That could see the price-tag for Lindelof sky-rocket, as clubs look to out-bid each other in the market, potentially raising the figure beyond £38m- a price that United were said to lining up last summer.

However, the emergence of Chelsea and Inter on the market may cause huge problems for Mourinho’s side, as they risk not being able to offer Champions League football- something their rivals could secure in the final months of the campaign.

Our landlord can’t call which way this battle will go but he’s expecting an audacious price for the player, who he argues may not be worth it.
