Chelsea stalwart set for emotional goodbye after big Conte signing

Though Chelsea were barely the most convincing in the transfer market, the Blues in the Transfer Tavern have their trust firmly placed in Antonio Conte.

Nominated for the Manager of the Month award in the early part of his Stamford Bridge tenure, the fiery Italian has embarked on a perfect start to life in England.

So, even reports from the Daily Telegraph haven’t seen his reported decision cast into doubt.

They suggest that Blues stalwart Branislav Ivanovic could see his time in West London come to an end, following the arrival of Marcos Alonso.

While the former Juventus and Italy manager is understood to have earmarked only a central defender upon his arrival, he is said to have changed his mind after working with the squad.

He then targeted a left-back and Alonso was drafted in.

Conte’s long-term plan is believed to involve reverting Cesar Azpilicueta to his natural right-back berth, using the recently-signed Spaniard on the left.

That would leave Ivanovic out, with the likes of Kurt Zouma, David Luiz and Gary Cahill all able to partner John Terry in central positions.

Having joined the club way back in 2008, the stoic Serb has won every domestic competition with Chelsea, as well as both the Europa League and the Champions League.

His potential departure has led the fans propping up the bar to reminisce about the 32-year-old in his pomp, which is perhaps indicative of his current standing.

Would Ivanovic be a big miss to the club? Let us know below…
