It was a nightmare opening game of the season for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, who are preparing for a long campaign ahead.
Indeed, doubts still surround the options available to Antonio Conte in his paper-thin squad, so the Blues in our bar are desperate for some new signings between now and the end of the summer.
While debutant Alvaro Morata impressed upon his Premier League bow, it’s another Spanish striker who threatens to define Chelsea’s summer. Diego Costa – a hugely popular figure in our bar – has given an explosive interview to the Daily Mail as his time at Stamford Bridge becomes even more controversial.
Thought to have been told by Conte over text that he’s no longer a part of his plans, the Spanish international has been strongly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. A return to the Spanish capital has been mooted for months, though the 28-year-old has shed some light on the Blues’ plans for him.
“If the manager doesn’t want me, I want to go to Atletico Madrid”, he said.
‘I have rejected other offers. They want to sell me to China or other teams. The language is better for me in Spain. If I’m off, I’m going to the club I want to go to — not the club that’s paying the most.”
A move to the Chinese Super League was mooted back in January, though Costa doesn’t seem to be keen to move over to the Far East, perhaps because of the World Cup coming up next summer.
As you can imagine, our west London locals just hope it’s sorted out as soon as possible.
It’s a dreadful situation for Chelsea and the longer Costa is on the books, this cloud will hang over Stamford Bridge. For Atletico Madrid, the saga is probably knocking down the price, so the Blues have to avoid being taken for a ride.
