Former Premier League footballer Ray Parlour hopes that Tammy Abraham is given the chance to lead the line for England if Harry Kane misses out on Euro 2020 through injury.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has recently revealed his concern that the England captain may not recover in time for the finals following the hamstring tear he suffered on New Year’s Day. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Parlour suggested that Abraham should be given the nod in Kane’s place if he is ruled out – and called on the 22-year-old to evoke the spirit of 1966 by spearheading his nation’s quest for continental glory.
He said: “Tammy’s done so well under Frank [Lampard], learning all the time, still – so give him the opportunity. This could be his opportunity – you know what football’s like. Geoff Hurst got an opportunity in a World Cup final and scored a hat-trick, and it could be someone like Tammy Abraham’s at the Euros.”
Despite the striker’s international inexperience (with just four senior caps to his name), Abraham’s emergence in the Premier League this season and recent England call-ups make Parlour’s opinion no wild suggestion, with Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson the only other recognised strikers among those selected in Gareth Southgate’s most recent Three Lions squad.
It would seem that they are therefore best-placed to stake a claim for Kane’s starting berth which limited Abraham to two substitute appearances in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2020 – during which he scored England’s seventh in their demolition of Montenegro in November in his last international showing.
That suggests the Blues striker is in pole position to step in should Kane not make it, and with Rashford being deployed in a wide role to some success on international duty and Wilson enduring a goalscoring drought for Bournemouth, it appears that Abraham’s competition may have to come from elsewhere if he is to be dislodged as Kane’s first-choice replacement come the start of June.
Therefore, Parlour has every reason to suggest that Abraham should be the man waiting in the wings as the nation sweats over Kane’s fitness.
