Here at the Football Transfer Tavern we feel that Barcelona striker David Villa is all we talk about with the player linked firstly with a move away then a supposed new contract on the table and now the Daily Mail has weighed in with a Boxing Day cracker.
The player has been out of favour at the Camp Nou and now Chelsea have become the latest club to be linked to the player. Rafael Benitez apparently wishes to bring in the striker as back up for Fernando Torres and to give the team an extra option going forward now that Daniel Sturridge is set to pen a deal at Liverpool and Romelu Lukaku is set to stay at West Bromwich Albion.
The 31-year-old is on a big money deal at Barcelona but is currently way down the pecking order with both a serious injury last season and now Alexis Sanchez’ good form hampering his chances of getting regular first team football. The World Cup in 2014 is weighing heavily on Villa’s mind and the striker is aware that he needs first team football to be considered for the squad.
Chelsea meanwhile will initially look to take the player on loan with a view to a permanent £12 million deal should big money moves for Radamel Falcao and other top targets fail.
