The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Antonio Conte will add a bit of consistency to their side’s game next season. The Blues have looked good at points so far this season, but they’ve struggled to put wins together, and that has been their main problem in pursuit of a top-four finish.
Our punters know that Chelsea need to add some quality additions to the squad ahead of next season, and the defence is a particular area of concern. Antonio Rudiger has been a real bright spark of the Chelsea first team, and he’s likely to get more of a prominent role next season, but the Blues need to bring in a bit more quality to support him.
Fortunately, one player that could be perfect is Greek centre-back Kostas Manolas, who is valued at £31.5 million on Transfer Markt.
The 26-year-old has been at the heart of the Roma defence for large parts of the season, clearing trouble away as well as scoring vital goals in the process. A force in the air, adept with the ball at his feet, and with endless bounds of determination, he’s exactly the sort of player that most teams would want in the defence.
Manolas was, of course, the man to score the unbelievable winner against Barcelona to send his team through to the Champions League semi-finals, so he’s clearly a man for the big occasion
The centre-back would definitely be an improvement on the ageing duo David Luiz and Gary Cahill, seeing as he has a lot more football left in him. His familiarity with Rudiger, too, would make him perfect alongside the German.
All top teams will be looking at just how Man City stormed away with the league title so they can learn a thing or two.
Their key to improvement was to sure up their defence which Chelsea also need to do to stop the big flow of goals being conceded, and Kostas Manolas may just be the perfect man to help do that.
