The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their team can redeem their poor 5th-placed finish next season by returning to the title contenders they always used to be.
Much was made of the Blues’ poor season but the stand-out criticism was of the players brought into the club. They certainly spent the money but in return, their investment offered little on the pitch. Alvaro Morata showed glimpses of what he’s capable of, scoring 11 goals in the Premier League but apart from the Spaniard, players like Davide Zappacosta, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater haven’t been up to the strong Chelsea standard they have achieved over the past few seasons.
If their poor transfer decisions are to be amended this season, Chelsea must go all out to secure the services of Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, who is valued at £22.5 million on Transfermarkt. During more than 5 years at the Portuguese club, Carvalho at times seems like a force of nature, his big, powerful stature allows him to completely boss the midfield and any opponents who dare to stand in the way. His presence alone in the middle of the park makes him the ideal candidate to be partnered next to the work-horse N’Golo Kante as the pair would seemingly form a brilliant partnership with a mixture of energy and tough tackling.
At 26, Carvalho could find the perfect opportunity to play in the Premier League to be this summer as younger players are starting to be the demanded ones in the market, instead of proven quality at times. As captain of Sporting Lisbon, Carvalho led by professionalism during his 38 appearances last season and 1 goal and 2 assists helped guide his side to 3rd in the league. Chelsea have to face up to their embarrassing transfer dealings of last summer by making amens, starting with the signing of William Carvalho.
