Chelsea’s acquisition of £11.25m-rated free agent would surely help seal Antonio Conte’s departure

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are divided in their opinion over whether Antonio Conte should remain at the club beyond the end of the season, but recent reports suggest that the fans should brace themselves for his departure.

Antonio Conte’s future has been the subject of speculation for the majority of the season so far – particularly since the turn of the year when results started to go against Chelsea. The speculation originally derived from Conte’s persistent criticism of the clubs board in the media regarding their transfer policy and a perceived lack of spending.

Those comments provoked plenty of discussion amongst the resident Blues propping up our bar. Many believed that he was merely using it as a tactic to deflect attention away from his side’s performances, whilst others claimed it was a strong indicator of his unhappiness at the club.

Regardless of your standpoint, it seems clear that Conte had a genuine grievance due to his insistence on consistently referring back to his issue with the clubs board. And if there is any truth in the reports from The Sun which claim Chelsea will attempt to sign Juventus’ left-midfielder/left-back Kwadwo Asamoah in the summer, then it seems certain that Conte will soon depart the club.

The report claims that Chelsea will sign Asamoah (valued at £11.25 million by Transfermarkt) on a free transfer when his current deal with The Old Lady expires in the summer. Considering the financial appeal of the transfer, it’s easy to understand why Roman Abramovich would be eager to complete a deal for Asamoah, but rumours from earlier in the season suggest Conte will be fuming about it.

Since the beginning of the season, Chelsea have been regularly linked with a move for Juventus’ first-choice left-back, namely Alex Sandro, but so far their rumoured interest has not resulted in an official bid. Sandro is certainly a better player than his Juventus teammate, and the Brazilian also has age on his side at just 27-years-old, so a move for Asamoah’s services would represent the less ambitious deal to pursue between the aforementioned players.

Conte’s career in West London currently hangs on a knife edge, and it seems that he is likely to depart at the end of the season unless he is given the appropriate funds which are necessary to bring his ideal targets to the club in the summer. The recent report from The Sun suggests that Chelsea’s hierarchy will continue to ignore Conte’s wishes and sign players which are not his first-choice, and if this proves to be the case, then the Italian manager is destined to depart Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
