Courtois replacement: Chelsea would be wise to land this £9m-rated star to replace stopper

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are still recovering following a disappointing season in the Premier League.

The Blues ended the campaign in fifth place, missing out on Champions League football. Despite securing the FA Cup, Antonio Conte’s future was plunged into doubt as a result of their poor league performance. Our punters are not pleased with the latest developments coming from Stamford Bridge.

With just one-year remaining on his contract, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been linked with an exit. Real Madrid are keen to bring the Belgian back to La Liga, and a lack of Champions League football could prove costly for the Blues. With Willy Caballero the only other senior keeper at the club, he will need to be replaced.

A smart move could be to sign Leicester City goalkeeper – Kasper Schmeichel. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Dane has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in recent years and grabbed a Premier League medal back in 2016. He travelled to the 2018 World Cup and saved multiple penalties but was unable to guide Denmark past Croatia in the round of 16.

The 31-year-old would be a risk-free move for the Blues if Courtois decides to leave the club. Conte can’t afford to take the risk on a foreign keeper who may be unsuited to life in England. Schmeichel averaged 2.8 saves per game last season (WhoScored) and kept eight clean sheets last season.

Conte would be wise to sign him if his number one does leave the club.
