Chelsea are no strangers to being linked with some of football’s hottest prospects these days.
However, to say the Blues do not always get it right when it comes to the transfer market would not be a statement too far away from the truth as many men have failed to reach the heights expected of them at Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, it would seem that they may have dodged a bullet back in 2016 as one talented playmaker’s path certainly has not taken him to the top.
According to a report by The Mirror, Chelsea were interested in signing Nicolae Stanciu from Steaua Bucharest after an extraordinary season.
The Romania international had recorded impressive figures of 14 goals and 11 assists, whilst also netting four goals in seven matches for his country that year, which reportedly piqued the interest of Antonio Conte’s side.
However, the Premier League side did not make a move for Stanciu as he subsequently joined Anderlecht that summer.
And, to say things have gone a little to the wayside might be a bit of an understatement.
Becoming the most expensive player to be bought by a Belgian club, Stanciu struggled to make a significant impact in Brussels and was offload to Sparta Prague 18 months later, where he once again became the most expensive player in the country.
However, the 26-year-old was on the move once again earlier this year when he headed to Saudi Arabia and joined Al-Ahli.
Versatile enough to play in the number ten role or as a winger, it would have been difficult to see him have a chance in Conte’s side if he had joined in the first place, but Michael Emenalo may have done Chelsea a favour on missing out on this alleged target altogether.
