Does Antonio Conte need to sign Virgil Van Dijk for Chelsea?

Chelsea supporters in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to seeing what their side does in the final few days of this transfer window.

Having endured an unexpected defeat at the hands of Sean Dyche’s Burnley on the opening day, the Blues emphatically silenced their critics with an accomplished 2-1 victory against Spurs at Wembley last weekend.

While many of our resident blues fans are still celebrating their indelible triumph, one problem still clouds Chelsea’s season – a lack of squad depth. The champions have been linked with a whole host of players over the course of recent weeks; one such player is Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk. While our landlord recognises that the Dutchman is an exceedingly talented player, he does not think that Antonio Conte should sign the centre-half this summer.

Chelsea have already acquired the services of Antonio Rudiger this summer; the 24-year-old became their second signing of the window following the arrival of Willy Caballero. Despite appearing nervy at times, the German international has impressed during his first two games.

Similarly, the Pensioners’ youth product, Andreas Christensen has returned from a two-year loan spell in Germany and slotted in Conte’s back three with a sense of ease against Spurs yesterday. The pair has displayed glimpses of brilliance during their short careers as Chelsea players.

While considering that Antonio Conte has David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger as options for the centre-back positions, signing another defender seems obsolete. Our landlord believes this is one area of the field in which the Blues flaunt sufficient squad depth.
