Chelsea plans for next season have taken a huge hit if the latest reports are to be believed.
Maurizio Sarri could be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer with Thibaut Courtois heavily linked with an exit. With just one-year remaining on his contract, the Belgian has been courted by Real Madrid who want a world-class stopper to replace Keylor Navas. According to reports in Spain, Los Blancos have had a bid of £35m accepted for the former Atletico Madrid man.
Chelsea want to find a replacement for Courtois before allowing him to return to Spain to be closer with his family. The Blues are long-term admirers of Roma’s Alisson Becker, but Liverpool have stolen a march in the race for his signature. So, things aren’t great between the posts at Stamford Bridge right now.
Instead, Sarri should make a move for AC Milan wonderkid – Gianluigi Donnarumma. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Italian is arguably the hottest prospect in world football after breaking into the Milan team at such a young age. At 16, he became the second-youngest goalkeeper to debut in the Serie A before becoming the youngest ever goalkeeper to appear for Italy.
Compared to Courtois, Donnarumma averaged more saves per game (2.12) than the Belgian last season (1.82). The Italian also boasted a better catch percentage (2.29) than Courtois (1.94) meaning he should have no problems dealing with life in the Premier League. Donnarumma’s distribution accuracy and pass completion were also higher meaning Chelsea will be able to play from the back next year (Squawka).
With AC Milan facing sanctions for breaching financial fair play regulations, there is no better time to lure him from the San Siro.
