The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned by reports which link Eden Hazard with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
Every club posseses a crown jewel which they simply cannot afford to lose without suffering drastic consequences, and in Chelsea’s case their crown jewel is certainly Eden Hazard (valued at £90 million by Transfermarkt). The Belgian international has been the standout player at the club since he joined from Lille in 2012, but after almost 6 years with the club it seems plausible that this will be his final season in West London.
According to reports in The Daily Mail, Hazard is interested in embarking on a new challenge with Real Madrid at the end of the season, and as such, he is refusing to sign a contract extension with the current Premier League champions.
Although it would be a bitter blow for everybody involved with the club to take, it is easy to sympathise with Hazard’s standpoint. The 27-year-old has remained committed to Chelsea throughout his career both on and off the field, but after 6 years it’s only natural that he is beginning to crave a new beginning.
If Hazard does indeed leave the club this summer then Chelsea’s title-bid will be left in tatters before a single minute of Premier League football has even been played, as he represents an indispensable, irreplaceable talent. His departure from Stamford Bridge would leave a creative gap within Chelsea’s midfield which the club would desperately struggle to fill in his absence.
Roman Abramovich has proven over the years that he is willing to spend huge sums of money for the benefit of Chelsea Football Club, but on this occasion it seems his financial power will prove to be a redundant force in determining Hazard’s future. However, if Madrid eventually decide to end their interest in Hazard, then Abramovich simply must offer Hazard whatever it takes to keep him at the club, otherwise Chelsea could be set to face a grim-looking trophy-less future.
