Forget Bakayoko, Chelsea should move for this superb holding midfielder instead

Chelsea will return to pre-season this summer fresh off the back of a remarkable Premier League campaign in which the Blues romped to the Premier League title.

After a one year absence from the Champions League, Blues fans will hope that their side will use this transfer window to put together a squad capable of competing for Europe’s top crown once, and a number of new faces are expected at Stamford Bridge in the coming months.

Here at the Transfer Tavern, we caught up with a Blues regular over a game of darts, who questioned whether his side’s potential move for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko – as per The Daily Mail – would come off, and debated potential alternatives to the French midfield general.

Our landlord suggested Napoli’s Jorginho, who could be available this summer if the right offer were to materialise for the 25-year-old Brazilian.

Jorginho has consistently impressed in the middle for Napoli since a move to the south of Italy in 2014, but remains under the radar despite being one of the best in his position in Europe.

Whereas Monaco’s Champions League run has seen interest likely cause higher fees for holding midfielders Bakayoko and Fabinho, Jorginho remains away from the limelight, and would be a steal if Chelsea turned their attention to the player.

Jorginho’s exotic name suggests a skillful attacking player, but this Brazilian is in the mould of Manchester City’s Fernandinho, and does the hard work in the middle of the park as well as possessing an excellent range of distribution.

If the Bakayoko deal doesn’t work for Chelsea, then Jorginho should be the next man in line to boss the midfield at Stamford Bridge next season.
