While many of the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are trying to palm the Community Shield off as a glorified friendly, their loss to Arsenal has proved a reason to drown their sorrows.
Indeed, it follows a difficult summer for the Blues in the bar, who aren’t quite sure on just how this season will pan out. Despite some big money signings, Antonio Conte’s squad remains thread bare and the Italian has hinted he’s in for a difficult campaign.
So, at least reports from the Daily Mirror have taken the collective minds of our west London locals off the difficulties at Stamford Bridge. They claim the Premier League champions are set to make a £60m move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in order to ease the 48-year-old’s concerns.
Antonio Rudiger has already been brought in to strengthen the back line, though both John Terry and Nathan Ake have been allowed to depart over the course of the window, and the Saints skipper would prove a popular signing in our bar.
Van Dijk would be an impressive addition and would only make the Blues even more difficult to beat. While another defender may not be exactly what Conte needs right now, signing the former Celtic man stops him from joining Liverpool at some point, weakening a potential title rival.
As long as he’s joined by others, he’d be a wonderful addition.
