Chelsea will be looking to strengthen their options at right-back during the upcoming January transfer window.
Maurizio Sarri has made an excellent start to life at Stamford Bridge but was given little time to strengthen his squad after replacing Antonio Conte. The Italian has transitioned the side into a more traditional 4-3-3 formation meaning Cezar Azpilicueta has been moved back to right-back. This has meant David Luiz has moved to the centre of defence and the Brazilian has been far from impressive so far this campaign.
Therefore, Sarri should look to sign a new right-back to allow Azpilicueta to move back into the middle. The transfer window reopens in less than a month, giving Sarri the opportunity to bring in defensive reinforcements.
The perfect addition to his squad would be Napoli right-back – Elseid Hysaj. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Albania international has been a mainstay in the Napoli starting eleven since joining from Empoli back in 2015. Hysaj was a crucial player during Sarri’s spell at the club, making 35 appearances in the Serie A. The defender remains firmly in the plans of Carlo Ancelotti, but his agent has suggested that a January exit could be on the cards.
Hysaj is a solid defender who would add some stability to the Blues back four. Strong in the tackle and excellent at reading the game, the 24-year-old would be a massive upgrade on Davide Zappacosta. While his attacking game leaves much to be desired, the defender has plenty of room to improve and working with a coach like Sarri again would be perfect for his development.
A reunion with the Italian tactician in January would be perfect for the Blues.
