The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been in dreamland recently after watching incoming manager Antonio Conte conduct a number of tactical masterclasses with Italy at Euro 2016.
While this incarnation of the Azzurri has been widely criticised for its lack of true top talent, the 46-year old former Juventus coach appears to be prying some class out of them all the same.
Perhaps they aren’t the most illustrious of players, but the Italians are proving to be tournament masters once more in the burgeoning stages of this summer’s showpiece in France.
One of those players in particular is Sunderland winger Emanuele Giaccherini, who has been touted as a shock potential target for the Blues upon the arrival of the former Juventus coach.
Though he never set the world alight on Wearside, the 31-year old midfielder was a key part of Conte’s dominant success with the Old Lady, winning two Serie A titles.
Having spent last term on loan with Bologna, the player’s agent has now revealed (with quotes sourced the the Sun) that his client has his heart set on a move to Stamford Bridge.
“Giaccherini is a player who played 80 per cent of the games for a Juventus that had Pogba, Pirlo, Vidal and Marchisio in midfield”, agent Furio Valcareggi told Sport Italia.
“Conte likes him a lot and Chelsea would be a dream. It’s still too early to talk about his future. After the Euros, whoever wants to buy him will not have to pay a high price to Sunderland.”
Will Conte deliver Chelsea a league title?
