Liverpool’s new manager Brendan Rodgers is hoping persuade former Chelsea winger Salomon Kalou to choose the Merseyside club over German Bundesliga side Schalke this summer.
Kalou is on a Bosman this summer after Chelsea decided not to renew his contract, and thus is free to join another club after his contract ran out last month. After Kalou participated in the winning of both the Champions League and the FA Cup last season one would he must be one of the most sought after free agents this summer with many clubs interested in obtaining his signature.
German club Schalke is thought to be the front runner for his services according to an article in the Mirror. Schalke manager Huub Steven’s claims in the article there is a stampede for the Ivory Coast international’s talents:
“Kalou is a Bosman player this summer. It’s obvious. There are many other clubs interested in him. Liverpool for example.”
“But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This could be our chance!”
If Rodgers could persuade Kalou to stay in England I think that he could do an important job on the Liverpool right-hand side after the departure of Dirk Kuyt to Fenerbahce. With Rodgers’ knowledge of Kalou from their time together at Chelsea maybe Brendan can convince the player to Liverpool and get the best out of him.
I for one am still unsure as to what Kalou’s best position is. At Chelsea he seemed to play as a striker as often as he did on the wing. Maybe with some regular football at Liverpool he will establish himself as one of the best wingers in the League.
It seems likely that wherever Kalou does end up he will have to take a reduction in pay in comparison to his wage at Chelsea. As a result one could suggest that Kalou needs to decide his next move from a career other than a financial stand-point.
The one downside to a move to Liverpool would obviously be the lack of Champions League football. I would suggest that after winning the competition last season Kalou would feel he should be playing football at that level again. With Schalke enjoying that honour next season and Kalou’s rumoured desire to leave England then I think Schalke 04 would be as good a destination as anywhere.
The chance to play with Huntelaar must also be enticing to a winger, knowing you are supplying balls to one of the most clinical strikers in the world at the moment.
To conclude at 26 years old Kalou still has time on his side. He has already achieved great things at Chelsea and I would suggest he will look to recreate those glories elsewhere. Liverpool are at least a season away from playing football at the highest level in Europe.
I believe if he wanted to stay in England he would certainly be an ideal replacement for Kuyt. However if he does leave these shores, then a club such as Schalke 04 would be a perfect destination.
Perfect in the fact that they are good enough a team to play in the Champions League, but not a good enough team that Kalou would have no chance to make the starting Xl.
