The Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern believe it’s the end for club captain Gary Cahill this summer. Indeed, while the England international has been a dependable servant for the club over the years, he’s endured a terrible season and the Blues in our bar believe the club need a new defender upon who to build.
With that in mind, the west London giants could do a lot worse than moving for Newcastle United captain, Jamaal Lascelles. The 24-year-old has become one of the most solid central defenders in the Premier League, helping marshal one of the meanest backlines outside of the top six.
Cahill, like John Terry before him, is showing signs and a solid, younger option to slot in alongside Cesar Azpilucueta and Antonio Rudiger would give Chelsea so much more in defence. Lascelles has shown an ability to operate in either a two or a three in central defensive areas and, while he’s barely John Stones on the ball, can help bring the team forward with his powerful strides.
The former Nottingham Forest man is also a palpable goal threat, notching four goals this season and would give the Blues a threat in either penalty box, so it’s easy to see exactly how he’d improve. There’s also his obvious natural leadership qualities, becoming captain of Newcastle United at aged 23 and guiding them to a Championship title, where others his age may well have been overawed.
Rated at just £6.3m on Transfermarkt, Lascelles would be a truly wonderful signing for Chelsea, should they look to move Gary Cahill on.
