Chelsea kicked off the 2018/19 Premier League season in style with a 3-0 win over Huddersfield at the Kirklees Stadium.
The Blues started the Maurizio Sarri era with a bang – N’Golo Kante opened the scoring after just 34 minutes with his scuffed volley fooling the goalkeeper. There was a debut goal from Jorginho who stroked home a penalty to double their advantage. A late goal from Pedro secured a routine victory in Sarri’s first game in England.
With the transfer window shut, Sarri will have to work with what he’s got after being given little time to shape the squad in the market. One man he needs to provide a chance to is midfielder – Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the England international spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace after falling out of favour under Antonio Conte. He scored twice in 24 appearances to earn him a place in England’s 2018 World Cup squad.
Schalke were reportedly keen to land his services on loan before the end of August, but conflicting reports suggest the German side have no interest in the youngster. That will be music to the ears of Chelsea fans who were hoping to see Loftus-Cheek given a prominent role in the first-team. Alongside Kante and Jorginho, the 22-year-old would flourish.
Blessed with excellent technical ability despite his large, physical frame, Loftus-Cheek is truly a one-of-a-kind footballer. However, he needs regular first-team football to fulfil his potential and Sarri must give him the chance to impress.
Chelsea fans, would you like to see Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the first team? Let us know!
