Chelsea fans will be eager for the club to strengthen before the transfer window slams shut in just seven days.
The Blues have paid the price by not resolving the future of Antonio Conte sooner. Finally, Conte was replaced by Maurizio Sarri earlier in the month. The Italian has just one week to finalise transfers after Premier League clubs voted to close the window before the season begins.
Sarri has signed just two players this summer – Jorginho joined his former boss at Stamford Bridge despite nearing a move to Manchester City. Veteran goalkeeper, Rob Green, also joined the club as back up to Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero. Recent reports have suggested Sarri is eager to bolster his midfield by signing Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey.
Instead, Chelsea should attempt to lure Lyon wonderkid, Houssem Aouar, to the Premier League. Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough season in Ligue 1. He made 32 appearances in the league, scoring six goals and registering five assists for his team-mates.
Despite his age, Aouar is blessed with excellent technical ability. He can be deployed in a deep-lying or an advanced playmaker role. The Frenchman can also play at left midfield where he thrived despite his lack of pace. He has the quality to unlock defences and would flourish alongside N’Golo Kante in the Chelsea midfield.
Under Sarri’s tutelage, Aouar would take his game to the next level and realise his potential as one of the world’s best midfielders. While Ramsey has arguably reached his peak, the sky is the limit for France youth international. He wouldn’t come cheap after penning a new five-year contract in July, but everyone has their price to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.
Replacing Danny Drinkwater with Aouar would be an excellent piece of business.
