Both Manchester United and Chelsea have been blessed in the area of left back for a number of years. Patrice Evra joined at the same time as Nemanja Vidic and has been as integral to the team as the terrifying Serbian.
Whereas after a rather bitter tasting transfer saga that got Ashley Cole moved from Arsenal to Chelsea for “footballing reasons” he has become recognised as one of the best left backs, if not the best, in the world, as former boss Carlo Ancelotti was quoted saying in the Guardian.
However, Ashley Cole’s contract runs out at the end of the season with PSG said to be sniffing around and Patrice Evra hasn’t looked like the world beater he was a few season’s ago. With this in mind it makes sense to hear from the Daily Mail that both teams had scouts watching 19 year old Lille left back Lucas Digne last weekend. The youngster has only just broken into the Lille team this year after playing a bit part role last season.
So far in a pretty disappointing start to the season from former Champions Lille, Digne has played every game and certainly has the raw potential that can be nurtured into talent ready for the Premier League. Which of the two teams it would be better to join would depend upon which team would allow him to go on loan again as at the moment he needs to play as many games as possible.
Staying at Lille, whether on loan or not, would be best for the young man’s career right now. Both Chelsea and Manchester United should have the intelligence within their management to see that if either decides to go in for him. Taking into account the fact that at Chelsea he would be seen as a long term replacement for Cole whereas United, who have just signed Buttner, would make him part of a left back merry go round similar to that of Manchester United’s goalkeeping rotational system.
So of the two I would probably go for Chelsea but I’m not putting Manchester United down as he could end up there and become a wonderful player for them. It should also be noted that former Newcastle and Manchester United target Mathieu Debuchy also plays for Lille and after a lot of speculation linking him with Newcastle over the summer and Lille’s poor start to the season, it seems unlikely the France international right back will be staying there for long.
Both Chelsea and United could use another right back in their squad and Debuchy would be an excellent acquisition. Whether or not Newcastle will come in for Cabaye’s former teammate remains to be seen but either way both these full backs look set to become hot properties in European football.
