Chelsea surely want to bring a new defender to Stamford Bridge this summer.
With an ageing backline, Maurizio Sarri has made strengthening his defence a priority this summer. The Blues have made just two signings this summer – the £51m signing of Jorginho from Napoli as well as landing Rob Green on a free transfer. With just ten days remaining in the transfer window, expect their activity to increase in the coming days.
Sarri is a long-term admirer of Juventus defender, Danielle Rugani and has reportedly courted him since taking over from Antonio Conte. Rugani is eager to play more first-team football, but Juventus surely do not want to sell their prized asset. The two clubs are way apart on their valuation of the defender, if reports are to be believed.
Instead, Chelsea should launch a bid for Rugani’s team-mate – Mattia Caldara. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Italian joined the club from Atalanta back in January 2017. He was then loaned back to the club for 18 months. Caldara made 24 appearances last season in Serie A, scoring three goals. The 24-year-old is held in high regard at the Juventus Stadium but still finds himself way down the pecking order.
Chelsea may be better served to offer Caldara the chance to move to the Premier League. While Rugani’s development has stalled in recent seasons, his team-mate has excelled, no defender has scored more goals (10) since the 2016/17 season.
Right now, Rugani is the safer option. He has Champions League experience and remains a better defender at the moment. However, Caldara has the potential to be special, and Chelsea would not regret spending big to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
